CPHC Learning Development Group

The Council of Professors and Heads of Computing have constituted a sub-group, the Learning Development Group, to address strategic matters that impact upon the quality of our students' experiences.

The aims of the LDG are:
  • To provide a focus for addressing teaching and learning issues for the CPHC community
  • To identify existing and/or potential actions inside and outside of the CPHC community relevant to these issues.
  • To promote networking across the CPHC community in spreading good practice
  • To support CPHC related staff in their teaching and learning activities
The Group's activities focus on the strategic management of teaching activity, and are complementary to those of the HEA Information and Computer Sciences activity, based in the university of Ulster.

The Group is run with a Steering Group which has representation on the CPHC Executive, and reports once per year to the CPHC AGM.

Forthcoming events and current projects:

Current work surrounds seeking support to progress these challenges: a companion CPHC/BCS project run by the Information Strategy Group enjoys HEFCE support to research the pre-university demand for Computing.
  • We keep a watching brief on curricular affairs, which intersect with consequences of the Bologna Declaration; there will be a Conference on this topic (inter alia) on 9th and 10th November 2006. A very successful Computing Curriculum Day was held on October 25 2002. Presentations from Peter Denning, Kruno Hernaut, Andrew McGettrick, Eric Roberts, Judith Scott, are readable.
  • Masters benchmarking: this issue is ongoing between CPHC and QAA. An informative workshop, was held in October 2003, which has generated a draft in use by many. Slides from the day and summary of delegates' feedback are readable.
  • Ethics in project work: This is an area of growing activity across science and engineering, for a number of reasons. We are actively considering the consequences for CS project work.
  • Attrition in Computing. We continue to solicit data (anonymised). A workshop was conducted jointly with HEA-ICS September 2004.
